Chin Augmentation – Mentoplasty Well-defined cheeks and chin give dimension and a sense of harmony to the face. Many of us are not born with prominent cheekbones, and the effects of aging and gravity can take their toll. The result is facial flatness and droopy skin in the mid-face region. What is called a “weak chin” to the discerning eye can often throw off facial balance. Often chin augmentation is suggested when a patient is considering rhinoplasty (nose contouring) to improve facial balance and harmony. Is Cheek or Chin Augmentation Surgery For You?As with all elective surgery, good health and realistic expectations are prerequisites. It is important to understand the surgery, and how it can improve structural balance to your face, and increase self-confidence. Another procedure to consider for the chin area is Smartlipo and submental liposuction to removal excess fat underneath the chin area. Making the Decision for Cheek or Chin Augmentation Surgery? When you are considering either cheek or chin augmentation surgery, it is important to choose a qualified facial plastic surgeon. During your consultation, your physician will examine your facial structure, and take measurements, when considering chin augmentation. This will help Dr. Hill determine the size and placement of the implant. Surgical techniques, risks, your medical history and attitude towards the surgery will be discussed. Both surgical procedures are typically done under local anesthesia in the office surgery suite. In some cases a mild oral sedative is recommended. Understanding the SurgeryTo augment the chin or cheeks – a small incision is made through the inside of the mouth. The surgeon will create a small pocket for the implant(s) which are made from a synthetic material that feels much like natural tissue. These are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. After the implants are positioned, the surgeon closes the incision with fine sutures. Photographs will be taken prior to scheduling your surgery. Preoperative antibiotics and healing supplements are recommended to reduce the risk of infection and minimize swelling and bruising. What to Expect After SurgeryImmediately following the surgery, you may experience some tenderness and slight bruising. A mild pain medication will be prescribed. Many patients experience mild swelling that may last for a few days to a few weeks. We recommend that you consume soft foods and liquids and avoid chewing gum. It is best that you avoid strenuous exercise for the next two weeks following surgery. Normal activity can be resumed after approximately ten days. Insurance does not normally cover the expense of surgery for cosmetic reasons. It is the patient’s responsibility to check with their insurance carrier for information on the degree of coverage. |
