Botox Injection

Botox

Botox (botulinum toxin) is an injection that temporarily stops muscle contraction. When certain muscles of the face contract, they cause the overlying skin to bunch, which leads to the formation of a wrinkle. By preventing the muscle from contracting, the skin does not bunch and wrinkles are softened. Fine wrinkles will significantly fade with time and become unnoticeable. Deeper wrinkles may not fully go away, but will be minimized, particularly if Botox is used regularly.

The effects of Botox last for an average of 3-4 months before waning. The amount of Botox needed depends on the area being treated, patient age, and strength of the muscle. A typical forehead may use anywhere from 12 to 24 units to achieve a desired result.

Despite claims, studies have not definitively identified any benefit to alternative forms of botulinum toxin (Dysport or Xeomin, both registered TMs). At Froedtert South Plastic Surgery we offer the actual Botox Cosmetic brand because of its superior performance and years of evidence confirming its safety and efficacy.

Not all Botox injectors offer the same level of experience and understanding of how to best deliver the injection. Be sure to choose an injector who has had formal plastic surgery training to ensure you achieve the best result.

Dr. Hill always starts with the fewest units of Botox possible to help determine exactly how much Botox you truly need in order to reach the results you desire. This keeps you from paying for Botox you do not need. Extra Botox does not result in a better effect or long lasting results.
